Brooke Rollins: Trump's Pick for Agriculture Secretary Vows to Support Biofuels

President Donald Trump's nominee for US Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, previously led a conservative think tank that opposed biofuels. However, during her confirmation hearing, Rollins pledged to "elevate and honor all sources of fuel," including biofuels.

Past Opposition to Biofuels

Rollins spent 15 years as head of the Texas Public Policy Institute, which advocated for fossil fuels and criticized corn-based ethanol. At the time, fossil fuel producers and biofuel producers were at odds due to a federal blending mandate.

Shifting Stance

Since then, the rivalry between the two industries has faded as fossil fuel companies have invested in biofuels made from corn and soybeans. The Trump administration is considering measures to boost biofuel sales. Rollins stated during her hearing that she would "be a secretary for all agriculture."

Biofuel Advocates' Expectations

Biofuel advocates are seeking clarification from Rollins on her current stance. Geoff Cooper, head of the pro-ethanol Renewable Fuels Association, hopes to "get more clarity and get an update" during her confirmation hearing.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The Biden administration has set a goal to significantly increase production of sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. Expanding the use of biofuels in aviation is seen as an opportunity for the Trump administration. Rollins is well-positioned to advocate for this due to her previous role as a top domestic aide to Trump.
