Pilbara Ports Authority Closes Several Due to Approaching Tropical Cyclone Sean

In response to the formation of Tropical Cyclone Sean off the coast of Western Australia's iron-ore rich Pilbara region, the Pilbara Ports Authority has closed the following ports late Saturday:

* Dampier
* Ashburton
* Varanus Island
* Cape Preston West

Expected Impact of Tropical Cyclone Sean

The low-pressure system is anticipated to intensify further by Monday, potentially reaching Category 3 cyclone strength. According to the Pilbara Ports, the cyclone will likely cause:

* Severe thunderstorms
* Destructive wind gusts up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour
* Storm tide between Port Hedland and Exmouth
* Increased rainfall in Pilbara coastal areas and western Kimberley

Precautionary Measures

To ensure safety, recreational vessel owners are urged to secure their vessels immediately. Port Hedland, Australia's largest iron ore export hub, was also closed Saturday, with bulk carriers instructed to depart by 6 p.m. local time.

Individuals residing in areas prone to flooding should take measures to protect their property and assist neighbors if necessary. Road conditions in the West Kimberley and Pilbara coastal regions are expected to deteriorate, potentially affecting travel.
