The US Treasury has employed individuals associated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), including Tom Krause, CEO of Cloud Software Group, and Marko Elez, an engineer previously with SpaceX and X. Both individuals possess Treasury Department offices, email addresses, and security clearances for accessing certain Treasury information.

Prior to President Trump's inauguration, a transition team member initiated meetings between Krause, Elez, and Treasury staff. They were subsequently hired by the Treasury, but their precise roles remain unclear. Since their appointment, they have interacted with personnel involved in managing the government's payment system and database.

Krause and Elez recently visited a federal facility in Kansas City to meet with staff responsible for the payment system. They also requested access to its underlying code, raising concerns among Treasury staff due to the infrastructure's critical nature within the US financial system. The purpose and status of their code access request remain unknown.

Neither the Treasury nor Krause and Elez have immediately responded to requests for comment. It is uncertain if Krause maintains his role at Cloud Software Group while working at the Treasury or concurrently holds both positions.

Krause's technology background includes executive positions at Broadcom and Cloud Software Group, formed after the acquisition of Citrix Systems by private equity firms. At Cloud Software Group, Krause merged Citrix and Tibco Software while implementing significant cost reductions.

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have requested an investigation into DOGE's Treasury activities, citing concerns about potential financial consequences. Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers acknowledges the potential benefits of modernizing government systems but cautions against efforts that violate Congressional appropriation authority or target specific beneficiaries.

President Trump has stated that Elon Musk, head of the DOGE initiative, requires Treasury approval for actions related to federal payments oversight. Summers emphasizes the Treasury Secretary's responsibility to preserve the integrity of government finance.
