Mexico Says U.S. Tariffs Not Justified Due to Trade Surplus

MEXICO CITY, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard has condemned the 25% U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Mexico, calling them "unjustified."

Ebrard cited data from the U.S. Census Bureau showing that Mexico imports more steel from the U.S. than it exports. He highlighted a decline in Mexican steel exports to the U.S. since 2022, while imports increased.

U.S. President Donald Trump imposed the tariffs on Monday, targeting the struggling steel and aluminum industries in the U.S. However, the move has raised concerns about a potential trade war.

Mexico is a major supplier of steel to the U.S., alongside Canada and Brazil. Around a quarter of all steel used in the U.S. is imported.
