Japan, US Foreign Ministers Vow to Strengthen Ties

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met to discuss enhancing bilateral relations. Iwaya expressed understanding from Rubio on the significance of the US-Japan economic relationship and Japan's contribution to the US economy.

While tariffs were not explicitly discussed, Iwaya emphasized Japan's commitment to working with the US to counter threats in the Indo-Pacific region, including China's actions. Rubio's spokesperson confirmed their discussions on deepening ties during the Trump administration.

Iwaya also met with National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and attended a Quad meeting with Rubio and their Australian and Indian counterparts. This meeting demonstrates the Trump administration's recognition of multilateral frameworks.

Regarding defense contributions, Iwaya noted Japan's increasing defense budget and discussed the potential for Japanese investment in the US. He requested the US to address concerns about Japanese investment.

The date for a summit between President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is still to be determined.
