Indonesia Approves Higher Nickel Mining Quota for 2025

Indonesia has set a nickel mining quota of 298.5 million wet metric tons for 2025, up from the 271.89 million tons allocated last year. This contradicts earlier reports suggesting a lower quota, according to the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) during a parliamentary hearing.

In early January, Indonesia's Energy Ministry announced a nickel mining quota of around 200 million tons, planning to review it to prevent further price declines. However, APNI Secretary General Meidy Katrin Lengkey stated during Wednesday's hearing, "The mining quota approved for 2025 has reached nearly 300 million tons, despite rumors of a production cut to 150 million tons."

Indonesia accounts for 63% of global nickel production, Lengkey said. In recent years, increased production has led to a global oversupply, causing a significant price drop since January 2024.

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Indonesia has become a major global supplier of nickel products since banning the export of raw nickel ore in 2020.
