East Palestine Settlement: $22 Million Deal with Norfolk Southern

East Palestine, Ohio - The Village of East Palestine and Norfolk Southern have finalized a $22 million settlement to resolve claims stemming from the devastating 2023 train derailment.

Settlement Provisions

The settlement funds will be allocated for priorities identified by the village related to the derailment. Additionally, Norfolk Southern acknowledges $13.5 million already disbursed to the village.

Safety Improvements

Norfolk Southern has committed a further $25 million to enhance East Palestine City Park, reiterating its commitment to improving community safety.

Regional Safety Training Center

The parties agreed that a proposed regional safety training center in East Palestine is not feasible and will not be pursued. Norfolk Southern will transfer 15 acres acquired for the center to the village.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Separate legal actions are pending. Residents contesting Norfolk Southern's $600 million settlement are challenging a bond requirement to continue their appeal for increased compensation and information about contamination. A portion of the settlement remains on hold due to the ongoing legal proceedings.
