Elon Musk's xAI Supercomputer Raises Environmental Concerns

Elon Musk's AI startup xAI intends to continue utilizing 15 gas turbines to power its formidable "Colossus" supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, as per an operating permit obtained by the Shelby County Health Department. The permit grants permission for uninterrupted turbine operation from June 2025 to June 2030.

Environmental Impact

Concerns have surfaced regarding the turbines' environmental impact. These 20-year-old units release hazardous air pollutants (HAP), including formaldehyde, exceeding the EPA's 10-ton annual limit for a single source. According to the permit, each turbine emits 11.51 tons of HAP annually.

Lack of Public Oversight

The turbines have been operational since summer 2024 without public awareness or oversight, states Eric Hilt, spokesperson for the Southern Environmental Law Center. The permits do not factor in these prior emissions. Hilt criticized xAI's lack of transparency with the community and local authorities.

Pending Approval

The health department clarified that the permits have yet to be approved and no timeline for approval has been set.
