Rivian and Volkswagen JV Eyes Software and Architecture Supply Deals

U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian and its joint venture partner Volkswagen are reportedly in discussions with other automakers to provide their advanced software and electrical architecture.

The JV, established with Volkswagen's $5.8 billion investment, aims to develop integrated electrical infrastructure and software technology for the future EVs of both companies.

Rivian's software and architecture platform offers reduced electronic control units and wiring, minimizing weight and simplifying manufacturing. It also enables over-the-air software updates, defining the concept of "software-defined vehicles" in the industry.

"Many other OEMs are expressing interest," said Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid.

The JV's technology is seen as a valuable asset for traditional automakers struggling to keep pace with software development. It eliminates the need for automakers to invest heavily in building their own software platforms.

"Any OEM looking to advance technologically can leverage the JV as a strategic partner," added Bensaid.

Industry analysts believe the JV has the potential to emerge as a dominant player in software and architecture supply, alongside Tesla. It also addresses concerns about Rivian's capital requirements, providing financial relief to the company.
