UnitedHealth Group has appointed Tim Noel to succeed Brian Thompson as CEO of its UnitedHealthcare subsidiary. The announcement was made on Thursday, following Thompson's tragic death in December.

Noel, who previously led UnitedHealthcare's Medicare and retirement business, joined the company in 2007. He brings extensive experience and expertise to his new role.

UnitedHealthcare is the largest insurer in the US, providing coverage to over 49 million individuals. It also dominates the Medicare Advantage market, with 7.8 million members enrolled in its privately run versions of the federal program.

The parent company, UnitedHealth Group, operates an Optum segment that includes one of the largest pharmacy benefit managers in the country and offers a range of healthcare services.

Thompson, 50, was shot and killed outside a New York City hotel in December. A suspect, Luigi Mangione, has been charged in connection with his death.

UnitedHealth Care Inc. shares closed up nearly 2%, or $10, on Thursday to $529.66.
