Merz to Decide on UniCredit-Commerzbank Merger by Year-End

UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel seeks to engage with Germany's newly elected government regarding a potential takeover of Commerzbank. Orcel anticipates receiving clarity by the end of the year.

The German government's stance is crucial, as Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who opposes the merger, will potentially be succeeded by conservative candidate Friedrich Merz.

"Without government support, it will be challenging," said Orcel. "I hope for clarification by summer. Realistically, we should have a definitive answer by the end of the year."
