Trump Settles Lawsuit with Elon Musk's X over Twitter Ban
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump has settled a lawsuit against Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, over the platform's ban following the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
According to an anonymous source familiar with the matter, the settlement amounts to approximately $10 million. A portion of the funds will cover Trump's legal expenses, with the remainder allocated to his future presidential library.
This marks the latest instance of a major corporation reaching a significant settlement with Trump to resolve litigation. It follows Trump's threats of retaliation against critics and opponents.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the settlement. Musk, who acquired Twitter in 2022, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Since purchasing the platform, Musk has invested over $200 million in support of Trump's 2024 presidential campaign and has joined Trump's administration to lead efforts to downsize the federal bureaucracy.
In recent months, Meta agreed to pay $25 million to end Trump's lawsuit over his suspension from their platforms after the Capitol attack. ABC News also settled a defamation lawsuit with Trump for $15 million, with the payment directed toward his presidential library.
Trump has filed additional lawsuits against Alphabet's Google for his ban from YouTube, CBS News for an allegedly misleading interview with his opponent Kamala Harris, and The Des Moines Register for publishing a poll that reportedly understated his support in Iowa.
