House Speaker Johnson: Trump Considers Exemptions to Tariffs

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson stated on Wednesday that President Trump is contemplating granting exemptions to retaliatory tariffs, including those targeting the automotive and pharmaceutical sectors.

As per a source informed about the discussions, Trump informed Republicans during a White House meeting last week that he was weighing four exclusions from the reciprocal tariffs, involving imported vehicles and pharmaceuticals.

"I believe the White House has earmarked certain categories for differential treatment, and I anticipate these two to be among them," Johnson said in a brief interview. "However, I'm not positive. You'll need to direct inquiries to the White House for confirmation."

The White House has yet to comment on the matter.

Trump's trade advisors are currently devising strategies for the reciprocal tariffs that the President has vowed to levy on any nation imposing duties on U.S. imports. These actions have sparked concerns of an escalating global trade conflict and potential inflationary pressures.

Granting exemptions would imply a more refined approach to tariff implementation than Trump's past sweeping tariff threats.
