Tencent Wins $85 Million in Copyright Infringement Case Against TV Box Firm

Austin, Texas - A U.S. district court has awarded Chinese tech giant Tencent nearly $85 million in compensation after finding that Taiwan-based TV box firm Unblock Tech and other distributors violated copyrights of video content developed by Tencent.

Background:

Tencent Penguin Film, Tencent Computer System, and Tencent Technology filed a case accusing the defendants of illegally copying, distributing, and importing more than 1,500 of Tencent's shows, including popular dramas like "Little Days" and "Three Body Problem."

Judgment:

On February 7th, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas ruled in favor of Tencent. The company has yet to respond to requests for comment. Unblock Tech has also remained silent on the matter.

Significance:

"In video content infringement cases, cross-border infringement is challenging to address," said Vivian Toh, an analyst at TechTechChina. "Tencent's victory highlights its commitment to combating such infringement."

Previous Cases:

Tencent has previously filed copyright infringement lawsuits against TikTok and Douyin-owner ByteDance in Chinese courts, alleging unauthorized use of its programs. The outcome of these suits remains undisclosed.
