Taiwan Rejects U.S. Criticism, Affirms Its Role in Semiconductor Industry
Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of the island's dominance in the semiconductor industry. NSTC head Wu Cheng-wen emphasized the complexity and collaborative nature of the sector, rejecting the notion of a single country monopolizing control.
In a Facebook post, Wu acknowledged Taiwan's reputation as a global benchmark in semiconductor manufacturing. He attributed this success to decades of government investment and partnerships with industry leaders, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
Wu highlighted the specialized capabilities of different countries in the industry, including Japan's expertise in chemicals and equipment and the U.S.'s dominance in system design and application. He argued that division of labor is essential and that no single nation should seek to control the entire value chain.
Taiwan, Wu declared, stands ready to collaborate with "friendly democratic countries" and support their involvement in the global semiconductor supply chain.
