Starbucks Prioritizes Safety and Customer Experience with New Policy

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol announced a reversal of the company's open-door policy, implementing a Coffeehouse Code of Conduct. Only paying customers will be permitted to occupy seats or use restrooms, based on input from both customers and employees.

"Our first priority is our paying customers," said Niccol. "It just makes a lot of sense."

Enhanced security measures may be implemented if necessary, but employee safety remains paramount. Niccol emphasized the importance of a supportive work environment and the potential for store closures if economic viability is compromised.

"We really do believe the combination of our partners, the quality of our coffee, and the third-place experience that we can deliver, nobody else does it like us," Niccol stated.

The company aims to double its US footprint, with potential for expansion in under-penetrated markets. However, store closures are anticipated to ensure future success.

William Blair analyst Sharon Zackfia anticipates a slowdown in restaurant development in fiscal 2025. New US locations continue to drive incremental sales, contributing to the company's turnaround efforts.
