Samsung and LG Consider Shifting Home Appliance Production from Mexico to the US Amid Tariff Threats
SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) - South Korean tech giants Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are contemplating relocating certain home appliance manufacturing operations from their Mexican facilities to their US plants in response to potential US tariffs.
The move is being considered following US President Donald Trump's announcement of plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico starting February 1st.
According to the Korea Economic Daily, Samsung Electronics is looking into moving dryer production from its Mexican plant to its facility in South Carolina. LG Electronics is also exploring the possibility of shifting refrigerator manufacturing from Mexico to its Tennessee plant, which currently produces washing machines and dryers.
Samsung has stated that it intends to monitor the situation and react appropriately, considering its global production network. LG Electronics emphasized its commitment to adapting its production system and locations to market developments.
