Electric Vehicle Tax Proposed to Fund Road Infrastructure

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A group of Republican senators introduced a proposal Wednesday to impose a $1,000 tax on the purchase of new electric vehicles (EVs) to offset the federal government's expenses on road maintenance.

The proposal acknowledges the lack of fuel taxes paid by EV owners, which traditionally cover a significant portion of road repairs. The one-time $1,000 fee levied at the time of purchase is estimated to be comparable to the amount paid by conventional vehicle drivers in federal gas taxes over a 10-year period for highway funding, according to Senator Deb Fischer, the lead sponsor of the measure.
