Red Sea Ship Traffic Remains Subdued Despite Yemen Truce

Amidst an extended absence of attacks from Yemen's Houthi rebels, ship traffic through the Red Sea has not witnessed any significant recovery.

According to the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), the number of vessels navigating the Gulf of Aden remains unchanged despite the truce declared last month.

Industry leaders warn of a gradual return to the Red Sea due to persistent Middle Eastern tensions. Shippers continue to opt for the longer but safer route around Africa's southern tip.

The Houthis, supported by Iran, initiated attacks on Israeli-linked and Western vessels in 2023 during the Gaza conflict. The ceasefire in May paused these attacks, but its fragility was exposed this week with accusations of violations by both sides.

JMIC maintains its assessment of an unchanged threat to merchant vessels and advises vigilance in the industry, despite the perceived calm in maritime security.
