OpenAI and SoftBank Invest $38 Billion in Joint Venture for AI Data Centers
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Japanese conglomerate SoftBank have committed $19 billion each to establish Stargate, a joint venture focused on developing data centers for artificial intelligence (AI) in the United States. OpenAI will own 40% of Stargate and serve as an extension of the company. SoftBank is expected to hold a similar 40% stake.
The investment aligns with the announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, where he stated that OpenAI, SoftBank Group, and Oracle would invest $500 billion over the next four years to support the United States' AI leadership globally. Stargate will initially invest $100 billion, with the remaining capital expected to be deployed over the following four years.
SoftBank and OpenAI are leading the Stargate project, with executives from both companies indicating that the venture will play a crucial role in advancing AI technology within the United States.
