Education Nominee Vows to Continue Student Loan Forgiveness Program

Linda McMahon, the nominee for Secretary of Education, has affirmed her commitment to upholding the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. During her confirmation hearing, she stated that she would resist pressure from within the Trump administration to eliminate this popular initiative.

PSLF, which offers debt relief to individuals employed in government or non-profit organizations, has faced criticism from Republicans. They contend that it is expensive and unfairly favors select fields. However, McMahon emphasized that the program was enacted by Congress and should be honored.

Under the Biden administration, the Department of Education prioritized enhancing PSLF. Over 1 million borrowers have received debt forgiveness since 2021. Improvements included streamlining the application process, allowing for counting of past payments, and expanding the definition of on-time payments.

McMahon reaffirmed her unwavering support for PSLF, stating that it is "the law." Despite concerns that the Trump administration could obstruct the program, McMahon emphasized her commitment to maintaining its functionality.

Advocates remain cautious, citing the appointment of former student debt servicers to key positions in the Department of Education. However, undoing recent improvements would require a lengthy rulemaking process.

Mike Pierce, executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center, expressed apprehension about potential disruptions from Elon Musk's DOGE team. Nonetheless, McMahon's declaration provides some assurance to borrowers seeking student loan forgiveness.
