Intel Receives €536 Million in Default Interest from EU

U.S. tech giant Intel has received €515.55 million ($536 million) in default interest from EU antitrust regulators. This follows a €1.06 billion fine levied against the company in 2009.

In 2022, Intel successfully challenged the fine in court, leading to its annulment. The European Commission has since paid the default interest compensation.

The payment comes amid a growing trend of companies seeking compensation for default interest on overturned antitrust fines. "The Commission paid Intel on 6 November 2024 the appropriate interest compensation of €515 547 908.15," EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera stated in a written comment.

While the court overturned most of the Commission's decision, it upheld Intel's payments to HP, Acer, and Lenovo to hinder competing products. This led to a separate €376 million fine for Intel in 2023.
