ILA President Urges Ratification Vote Approval for Historic Contract
After securing a potentially record-breaking contract extension, the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) prepares for a crucial ratification vote.
ILA President Harold Daggett emphasized the importance of member approval in a recent letter, writing, "The ratification vote is the final obstacle that must be overcome to ensure our members' protection for the next six years."
The new six-year master contract, negotiated with terminal operators and ocean carriers, covers 25,000 container handling workers across 14 ports. It includes significant enhancements:
* 62% pay increase over the contract period
* Improved benefits
* Job guarantees amidst automation advancements
Over the past two weeks, union locals have reviewed the contract details meticulously.
Daggett highlighted the contract's value at a local meeting in New Jersey, stating it totals approximately $35 billion — a conservative estimate.
On Tuesday, February 25, ILA members in good standing across all covered ports will cast their votes on the ratification. Daggett implores all members to vote in favor of the agreement.
