Historic Winter Storm Impacts US Natural Gas Exports, Transportation

A historic winter storm has disrupted natural gas shipments from one of the largest US export plants and caused widespread closures and flight cancellations across the southern United States.

Natural Gas Exports Affected

The Freeport LNG complex in Texas has shut down "intermittent" power outages. This disruption has raised concerns in Europe, where gas prices have spiked due to potential supply disruptions.

Severe Weather Conditions

A low-pressure system has brought frigid weather and heavy snow from Texas to North Carolina. The US National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for an area stretching from Port Arthur, Texas, to Lafayette, Louisiana.

Transportation Disruptions

Heavy snowfall has closed schools, airports, and highways across Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. Houston, New Orleans, and Jacksonville airports have been closed, affecting thousands of flights. Amtrak has canceled multiple trains in the Gulf Coast region.

Texas Grid Woes

The Texas electrical grid operator issued a transmission emergency alert early Tuesday due to "loss of transmission from freezing precipitation." Peak electricity demand is expected to climb, but the grid operator anticipates having sufficient supply. Around 12,000 customers in South Texas and 18,000 in North Florida reported power outages.

Freezing Temperatures

Temperatures have plummeted across the southern United States, with some areas experiencing record lows. The frigid conditions have raised concerns about increased electricity demand and potential disruptions to natural gas and oil production.

Recovery Outlook

The deep freeze is expected to dissipate later in the week, with temperatures rising by Friday. Transportation disruptions are anticipated to subside as conditions improve.
