Google Shapes AI Policy Narrative Amidst Regulatory Scrutiny

Alphabet's Google, facing intense regulatory attention, seeks to influence public perception and policies on artificial intelligence (AI).

To address concerns, Google emphasizes education initiatives to upskill the workforce on AI. "Familiarizing individuals and organizations with AI tools enhances policymaking and unlocks opportunities," says Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Alphabet.

Amidst competition from Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta, Google is aware of regulatory scrutiny in advertising and search. It has proposed selling parts of its ad tech business to appease European regulators. In the US, the Justice Department aims to break up its Chrome browser.

Globally, governments draft regulations on issues potentially amplified by AI, such as copyright and privacy. Tech giants face pushback from the EU AI Act, which assesses risk and mandates disclosures for AI systems.

Google sees an opportunity to shape the narrative around AI, addressing concerns about job displacement. CEO Sundar Pichai announced a $120 million investment fund for AI education programs. Executives engage with governments globally to discuss policy recommendations.

Google's initiatives include "Grow with Google," providing skills training for data analysis and IT support. Specialized AI courses, such as one for teachers, are being added.

Walker emphasizes the need for partnerships with community colleges and public-private entities to train workers for in-demand jobs. "If we can effectively fertilize these efforts, that's our role," says Walker.

Google cites studies that project AI will complement most jobs. However, economist David Autor warns of the need for immersive training programs beyond classroom settings.

As AI regulations evolve, Google aims to shape policies and prepare the workforce for the transformative impact of AI.
