Nuclear Power Vital for Europe as Hydrogen Momentum Wanes

DAVOS, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Nuclear power is essential in Europe to "keep the lights on," while the hype around hydrogen has "already faded," the CEO of Europe's largest utility Iberdrola said on Thursday at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos.

"At least the nuclear plants that are already operating, we have demonstrated that they are safe, they are efficient, they are absolutely required to keep the lights on when you have new demand, like data centers," said Ignacio Sanchez Galan. "I think this baseload is absolutely critical."

At the same time, Sanchez Galan was cautious about the prospects for hydrogen.

"The hype about hydrogen has already faded," he said, adding that expected support had not materialized.
