Europe Intensifies Scrutiny of DeepSeek Amid AI Privacy Concerns

National privacy regulators in Europe are considering further actions against DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) announced.

At a recent monthly meeting, regulators expressed concerns over DeepSeek's data collection practices and the lack of transparency regarding its use of personal data. Regulators from Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and others have questioned DeepSeek's compliance.

"Data protection authorities have initiated actions against DeepSeek, with potential future measures," stated an EDPB spokesperson.

These concerns have prompted the EDPB to expand the scope of its task force, initially formed in April 2023 to address AI-related enforcement, beyond ChatGPT.

"EDPB members emphasized the need for coordinated DPA actions on critical privacy matters," the spokesperson said, noting the establishment of a quick response team for urgent issues.

Europe has been at the forefront of data privacy protection, with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) being one of the most stringent privacy laws globally.
