EU antitrust regulators to decide on AMD's $4.9B ZT Systems bid by March 12

European Union antitrust regulators will decide by March 12 whether to approve, with or without conditions, or open an in-depth investigation into U.S. chipmaker AMD's planned $4.9 billion acquisition of server maker ZT Systems.

AMD announced the proposed transaction in August 2022 to bolster its portfolio of artificial intelligence (AI) chips and hardware, enhancing its competitive position against rival Nvidia.

The EU's preliminary review of the deal has concluded, and the European Commission can now either clear the transaction, subject to any remedies, or initiate a four-month-long investigation if it identifies serious competition concerns.

ZT Systems is a leading provider of AI infrastructure to the world's largest hyperscale computing companies, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms.
