EU Extends Russia Sanctions as Hungary Lifts Opposition

European Union (EU) foreign ministers have agreed to prolong sanctions against Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine, following Hungary's decision to withdraw its objections.

Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, had previously delayed the extension, requesting assurances regarding energy security and Ukraine's gas transit.

The EU has imposed 15 rounds of sanctions on Russia since February 2022. These have significantly impacted Moscow's ability to finance its war effort.

In exchange for Hungary's support, the EU has provided guarantees regarding energy security, including pledges to protect oil and gas pipelines and request Ukraine to maintain crude oil transit.

Despite the extension of sanctions, the EU is working on a new set of measures, anticipating further resistance from Hungary.

Separately, the EU is considering easing sanctions against Syria. However, any such move would include a "snapback" mechanism to reimpose restrictions if necessary. This would ensure a peaceful transition after the departure of President Bashar Al-Assad and facilitate the return of displaced people.
