Elon Musk's Offer to Buy OpenAI Rejected
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed the nonprofit controlling ChatGPT maker OpenAI is not for sale. Altman dismissed Elon Musk's reported offer of $97.4 billion, calling it "ridiculous."
As of Tuesday afternoon EST, the status of the bid remains disputed. Musk's lawyer claims an offer was sent, while an OpenAI board source denies its receipt.
Altman stated that the company "is not for sale" and accused Musk of tactics to "mess with us." In an internal message to employees, Altman said the board intends to reject any offer that conflicts with OpenAI's mission.
Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015 but departed before the company gained traction. He subsequently established xAI, a competing AI startup.
OpenAI seeks to transition into a for-profit entity to secure capital for AI development.
