Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program to Continue Under McMahon

Linda McMahon, nominee for Education Secretary, affirmed her commitment to maintaining the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program during her confirmation hearing.

Despite pressure from the Trump administration to eliminate the program, McMahon stated, "We should honor those programs" already established by Congress.

The PSLF program, which forgives debt after 10 years of on-time payments for government and nonprofit employees, has faced criticism from Republicans who view it as costly and biased towards public sector workers.

Under the Biden administration, the program underwent significant improvements, allowing for streamlined applications and broader eligibility. Over 1 million borrowers have received debt forgiveness since 2021.

McMahon emphasized that the program would remain operational, even if opposed by the administration. She clarified, "Yes, because that's the law."

However, student advocates raise concerns that the Trump administration may still hinder the program, citing recent changes in personnel and a history of resistance to debt forgiveness.
