EDP Renewables Powers Microsoft Data Centers with Solar Projects

EDP Renewables North America announced the completion of three utility-scale solar projects and the signing of a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Microsoft.

Big Tech companies have invested heavily in AI data center development, recognizing the need for sustainable energy sources. Microsoft is among those leading the charge, seeking to reduce its carbon emissions and power its facilities with cleaner energy.

Project Details

The three solar projects will generate approximately 400 megawatts (MW). Microsoft will purchase 389 MW of electricity and renewable energy credits (RECs) through VPPAs.

* Jacksonville, Illinois: 140 MW solar project operational since November 2022
* Jerseyville, Illinois: 110 MW solar park operational since November 2022
* Austin, Texas: 150 MW solar park operational since December 2022

Collaboration with EDP

This announcement brings EDP's total operational portfolio with Microsoft in the United States to five projects. EDP is a leading renewable energy provider, playing a vital role in reducing the carbon footprint of tech giants like Microsoft.
