Baidu Opens AI Model Following DeepSeek's Success

Chinese tech giant Baidu has unveiled the open-source release of its AI model, Ernie 4.5, inspired by the popularity of DeepSeek's model. This move signals a shift from Baidu's previous stance on closed-source models.

DeepSeek's open-sourced AI model, launched in January, has garnered significant attention and outperformed models from established players like OpenAI and Meta. Its success has demonstrated the potential of open-source models in driving adoption.

"We learned from DeepSeek that open-sourcing the best models can greatly help adoption," said Baidu CEO Robin Li. "When the model is open-source, people naturally want to try it out of curiosity, which helps drive broader adoption."

Baidu's decision to make Ernie 4.5 open-source aligns with the rising trend towards open-source AI models. Open-source allows for free and open sharing of software, promoting innovation and collaboration within the tech community.

Furthermore, Baidu has announced that its AI chatbot will be free to use from April 1st. This move comes amid stiff competition in the chatbot market and reflects Baidu's strategy to enhance its technology and reduce costs.

Baidu's shares have surged in recent months, signaling investor confidence in the company's AI capabilities. The recent announcement of open-source Ernie 4.5 and free chatbot access is expected to further boost its competitive position.
