China Initiates WTO Dispute Over Trump-Era Tariffs

China has filed a formal dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump on Chinese goods.

The tariffs, which took effect in May 2019, levied a 10% tax on Chinese imports into the United States. China has argued that these measures violate US obligations under the WTO agreement, citing their discriminatory nature.

In a statement submitted to the WTO, China reserves the right to take further actions during consultations and any potential request for the establishment of a dispute settlement panel.

Notably, the WTO's dispute settlement system remains partially paralyzed due to the lack of appointments to the Appellate Body, the final arbiter in trade disputes. The US, under both the Trump and Biden administrations, has opposed filling vacancies on the Appellate Body, citing concerns about judicial overreach.
