Boeing CEO: Elon Musk Assisting in Expediting Next Air Force One Production

CEO Kelly Ortberg Discloses Boeing's Collaboration with Musk

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg has announced the company's collaboration with Elon Musk to accelerate the production of the Next Air Force One (VC-25B). This move aims to address the aircraft's ongoing delays and spiraling costs since Boeing's initial contract in 2015.

Lost Billions and Delays

Boeing has incurred losses exceeding $2 billion on the project, primarily due to production issues and delays. The aircraft's initial delivery date was set for 2024, but has since been pushed back to at least 2027.

President Trump's Demand for Earlier Delivery

Ortberg revealed that President Donald Trump expressed his desire for an expedited delivery of the aircraft. Boeing is actively working with Musk and his team to identify ways to advance the schedule.

Constructive Discussions and Efficiency Initiatives

"Discussions have been constructive," Ortberg stated, commending the Department of Government Efficiency. He further mentioned their focus on removing unnecessary processes that hinder production.

Cost-Cutting Measures and Design Changes

During President Trump's tenure, he renegotiated the contract, threatening its cancellation if costs exceeded $4 billion. Subsequently, Boeing agreed to utilize two jets intended for a Russian airline that declared bankruptcy.

Under President Joe Biden, the aircraft's livery was changed to light blue, departing from Trump's preferred red, white, and blue design. This color adjustment was deemed necessary due to the potential impact of dark blue on aircraft temperature in certain environments.
