Bill Gates Believes Useful Quantum Computing Could Arrive Sooner Than Expected

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates believes the advent of practical quantum computing could be closer than previously anticipated.

Gates stated that there is a possibility that quantum techniques could produce enough logical qubits to solve complex problems within the next three to five years. He emphasized that Microsoft is actively involved in this space.

Despite acknowledging the potential challenges in developing and utilizing quantum computers, Gates expressed optimism about Microsoft's progress in this field. He praised the company's recent announcement of co-designing and building a powerful quantum machine.

Gates' views differ from those of Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, who estimated it would take 15 to 30 years for useful quantum computers to emerge. However, Huang remains optimistic about Nvidia's contribution to quantum development through its AI chip technology.

In contrast, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg expressed a more cautious perspective, suggesting that quantum computing may still be a decade away from practical applications.

Gates emphasized the uncertainty surrounding quantum's timeline but maintained that it is easier to predict the rapid advancements in AI. He noted that AI technology is expected to become extremely powerful over the next three to five years.
