As an arctic blast sweeps across the eastern and central United States, including Texas, more than 100 million people are facing dangerously cold conditions with record low temperatures expected.

Extreme Cold Spreads Across the US

The National Weather Service reports that extreme cold has reached the Gulf Coast and is extending to the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic. Temperatures in St. Louis are forecasted to plunge to 3F (-16C) overnight, while Dallas may reach lows of 14F. The US Weather Prediction Center predicts over 200 daily cold temperature records could be tied or broken by Friday.

Cold Warnings Issued in Central Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued extreme cold warnings across central Canada due to similar weather conditions.

Texas Grid Operators Expect Power Demand Increase

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) anticipates increased electricity demand but expects to meet the surge in consumption. Power demand reached a record winter high of 78.725 gigawatts, surpassing the previous high set in January 2021.

Snowfall and Milder Weather Forecast

In addition to frigid temperatures, snowfall is expected from Missouri to Virginia and North Carolina, with some areas receiving up to 10 inches of accumulation. By the end of the week, milder Pacific air will spread eastward, bringing above-normal temperatures and drier conditions, aiding recovery efforts in flood-stricken Kentucky.
