Anthropic Co-founder John Schulman Departs Amid AI Alignment Focus

Former OpenAI co-founder John Schulman has resigned from his role at Anthropic, the company announced Wednesday.

"We regrettably bid farewell to John," stated Jared Kaplan, Anthropic's Chief Science Officer, via email to Reuters. "We fully support his pursuit of new ventures and extend our best wishes."

Schulman's departure from OpenAI in August 2022 marked his transition to Anthropic. This move aimed to intensify his efforts in AI alignment and re-engage in practical technical work.

Anthropic, a formidable rival to OpenAI in the arena of AI foundation models, has reportedly surpassed $875 million in annual revenue. The company monetizes its models through direct access and partnerships with cloud service providers such as Amazon Web Services.

Schulman's exit from Anthropic was previously reported by The Information.
