American Airlines Jet, Military Helicopter Collide Mid-Air Near Washington Airport
An American Airlines (AAL) passenger plane and a military helicopter were involved in a mid-air collision near Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday evening.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet operating as Flight 5342 for American Airlines collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while approaching Runway 33 at approximately 9 p.m. local time. The flight, operated by American Eagle, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. Reports indicate that the passengers included figure skaters and their entourage.
The NTSB will lead the investigation, assisted by the FAA. The U.S. Army helicopter was conducting a training mission with three soldiers on board.
A search and rescue operation is underway in the Potomac River, with at least 13 fatalities confirmed. Emergency crews are actively searching for survivors.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom issued a video statement regarding the incident and provided a hotline number for loved ones of those involved.
