American Airlines, Military Helicopter Collide Mid-Air Near Washington D.C. Airport

An American Airlines (AAL) regional jet and a military helicopter collided in midair near Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) on Wednesday evening, resulting in multiple fatalities.

The collision occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The regional jet, operated by PSA Airlines as Flight 5342, was approaching Runway 33 when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter.

The plane was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the helicopter had three soldiers aboard on a training mission. Multiple outlets reported that the plane was carrying figure skaters and their entourage.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. Emergency crews are conducting a search and rescue operation in the Potomac River, where several bodies have been recovered.

At least 13 fatalities have been confirmed, with more expected as the search continues.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom issued a video statement expressing condolences and providing a hotline number for concerned loved ones.
