Survey Reveals Growing Concerns Among American Businesses in China

A recent survey by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in China has revealed elevated concerns among American businesses operating in the country. Over half of respondents (51%) expressed worries about a potential deterioration in the bilateral relationship between the United States and China.

The survey, conducted between October and November 2020, highlights concerns over geopolitical tensions, policy uncertainties, and trade disputes. These factors continue to weigh on the business environment in China for American companies.

Despite these concerns, almost half of respondents still consider China as a top-three global investment priority. However, a growing proportion of businesses (21%) no longer list China as a preferred investment destination, more than double pre-pandemic levels.

The survey also found that around a third of businesses reported experiencing unfair treatment in China compared to local firms, particularly regarding market access and public procurement.

The findings underscore the challenges and uncertainties faced by American businesses in China amidst ongoing geopolitical and trade tensions between the two countries.
