Amazon MGM Studios Acquires Creative Control of Iconic 'James Bond' Franchise

Amazon's MGM Studios has secured creative control of the highly esteemed "James Bond" franchise, strengthening its position in the streaming landscape.

The studio has established a joint venture to acquire intellectual property rights from longstanding franchise creators Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. Broccoli and Wilson will remain co-owners alongside Amazon, maintaining creative autonomy. Financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed.

"As my 007 career approaches six decades, I am transitioning from producing James Bond films to focus on my philanthropic endeavors," stated Wilson. "Therefore, Barbara and I have entrusted Amazon MGM Studios, our trusted partner, to guide James Bond into its future."

Amazon's acquisition of MGM Holdings in 2022 for $8.45 billion bolstered its streaming service, granting access to over 4,000 movies, including the "James Bond" franchise, and numerous television shows. However, distribution rights were the sole inclusion in the deal.

Amazon has resolved prior disagreements with Broccoli and Wilson, who previously held authority over production schedules, casting decisions, and storyline direction. Those responsibilities now fall under Amazon's purview.

The franchise is actively seeking a replacement for Daniel Craig as James Bond following his departure in 2021.

"We are honored to inherit this cinematic legacy and eagerly await ushering in a new era for the legendary 007 on a global scale," said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.

Amazon's extensive reach through Prime delivery services and ecosystem integration facilitates exceptional audience accessibility. It has recently ventured into ad-supported streaming by defaulting all Prime Video subscriptions to advertisements.
